Barnsley managerial latest: Huddersfield Town turn to target, MK Dons boss update and more

Barnsley remain in the hunt for a new permanent manager to replace Neill Collins.

Barnsley have a big decision to make as they prepare for another year in League One. They were recently beaten in the play-off semi-finals over two legs by Bolton Wanderers.

The Tykes reached the final last year but lost at Wembley to Sheffield Wednesday. The Yorkshire outfit will be hoping to mount another push for promotion next season under whoever they pick as their next manager.

They cut ties with Collins in late April despite sitting into the top six at the time. Martin Devaney was then placed in caretaker charge and got them over the line into the play-offs before their eventual loss to the Trotters.

Barnsley now have a big decision to make on who to bring in next and it is expected to be a summer of transition at Oakwell. Here is a look at the latest news…

Missed out on Michael Duff

The Tykes have looked at bringing back Michael Duff, according to journalist Alan Nixon on his Patreon page. However, the former Cheltenham Town and Swansea City man has now joined Huddersfield Town following their relegation from the Championship.

Martin Devaney stance

Devaney isn’t interested in landing the full-time managerial role following his stint in caretaker charge. As per the Barnsley Chronicle, he isn’t a candidate and will drop back into his previous coaching role.

Dominik Thalhammer move fell through

Barnsley were wanting to turn to Austrian boss Dominik Thalhammer, who has previously been at LASK Linz, Cercle Brugge and KV Oostende in the past. However, a move for him fell though, as per Nixon on his Patreon, as he wasn’t able to get a work permit.

He has since spoken out about the disappointment of missing out on a switch to England and has said, as per the Yorkshire Post: “I can confirm I will not join Barnsley FC because of the (permit) disaster. For me it would have been a very good fit. Of course it’s a big disappointment. I can’t change it.

“They said the exception panel would have been a formality. For me it’s randomness.”

Mike Williamson latest

The Tykes could ‘explore’ a move for MK Dons’ Mike Williamson now, according to Nixon on X. However, it remains to be seen whether he would be interested in the move.

His Dons’ side were battered 8-1 by Crawley Town in the play-offs over two legs. Another year in the fourth tier now beckons for them.
