Barnsley considering familiar face as they continue manager hunt

Barnsley are considering Michael Duff as they continue their hunt for a new manager, reports Alan Nixon.

Barnsley lost the 46-year-old last summer when Swansea City lured him to the Championship. He is back available now though and is being eyed for a second spell at Oakwell now as they search for a permanent replacement for Neill Collins.

Duff, who is from Belfast, guided the Tykes to the League One play-off final last year but they were beaten at Wembley by Sheffield Wednesday. The Yorkshire club have recently fallen at the semi-final hurdle this past season after losing over two legs to Bolton Wanderers.

According to journalist Nixon on his Patreon page, Barnsley could look to bring back Duff as they look to mount another promotion push from the third tier in the next campaign. He has been out of a job since December and has since been weighing up his options.

Who is this?

Barnsley eye Duff swoop

Duff did a great job at Barnsley during his first spell and bringing him back would be an interesting move, especially after he quit for Swansea City.

The Northern Irishman spent his playing days as a centre-back for the likes of Cheltenham Town and Burnley and made 720 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with 23 goals from the back.

He hung up his boots in 2016 and subsequently delved into the coaching world with the youth teams at Turf Moor.

Cheltenham Town then handed him his first managerial role in the Football League in 2018 and he guided them to promotion from League Two in 2021, winning the Manager of the Season award in the process.

Barnsley then lured him up north 12 months later and he won 55% of his games at the helm in his year in charge.

They got in the top six under his stewardship but they weren’t able to get over the line as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday in the capital after Josh Windass’ late winner.

Duff’s exit to Swansea City didn’t work out for him in the end and he was given the chop after just six months. They won six games out of 21.

Should Barnsley bring him back?

Barnsley have a big summer ahead and it will be a period of transition. They have a lot of loanees going back to their parent clubs and a few key players out of contract like Herbie Kane and Devante Cole.

Whoever comes in will have a big job on their hands and a clean slate to really put their stamp on the club.

Duff would be a safe pair of hands and did some great work with the Tykes when he was last year. He may also feel that he has a point to prove after his unsuccessful stint at Swansea City.
