Ipswich Town, Portsmouth and Peterborough United target National League star

Ipswich Town, Portsmouth, Peterborough United and Mansfield Town are all keen on Altrincham star Chris Conn-Clarke, according to Football Transfers.

Ipswich Town are heading for the Premier League and this summer will be spent preparing for the big step up. Portsmouth and Mansfield Town are on the rise too, winning promotion to the Championship and League One respectively while Posh will remain in the third-tier.

Given the differing divisions they find themselves in, few would have seen the clubs’ transfer targets crossing over.

However, as per a report from Football Transfers, all four sides have set sights on Chris Conn-Clarke.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has enjoyed a stunning campaign in the National League with Altrincham, registering 23 goals and 12 assists across all competitions. As such, he’s on the radars of Ipswich Town, Portsmouth, Peterborough United and Mansfield Town this summer.

It is added that while two years remain on his contract at Alty, the expectation is that he will head for pastures new after such a strong season in non-league.

Who is this?

The EFL awaits

Amid a stunning campaign of National League football, it seems as though a step up to the Football League is inevitable.

Clubs up and down the ladder dip into non-league to pick up some new gems and Conn-Clarke looks like the latest set to make that rise. Of those linked, Peterborough United are the most recognised non-league recruiter, with a host of stars stepping up at London Road before going onto even bigger things.

Conn-Clarke looks capable of making that jump and at only 22, few would expect him to slow down any time soon. Despite the highs of this season, it seems the best days of the Northern Irishman’s career await.

Ipswich Town a step too far?

Ipswich Town will be looking to make shrewd signings this summer but some may argue that a move to Portman Road may be a step too far for Conn-Clarke at this stage.

The Tractor Boys are heading for the Premier League and will likely pursue players with pedigree at a higher level than the National League.

Perhaps Conn-Clarke would have been a shrewd signing and possible target had they not gone up, but you would think they’ll be setting their sights higher as they gear up for top-flight football.

That could offer hope for EFL suitors Portsmouth, Peterborough United and Mansfield Town, but time will tell just what comes of the Altrincham star’s summer after his stunning campaign.
