Long-serving Leicester City striker eyed for bargain Aston Villa move

Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho is being eyed up as a summer target for Aston Villa, a report from Football Insider has claimed.

Leicester City have had Kelechi Iheanacho on the books for some time now, bringing him in from Manchester City in the summer transfer window of 2017.

The Nigerian striker has managed 64 goals and 34 assists in 231 games since. However, he’s endured a tricky season in the Championship and as the campaign draws to a close, he’s out the first-team picture.

Questions have surrounded his future at the King Power Stadium ever since relegation from the Premier League with Iheanacho’s Foxes deal up this summer.

Now, it has been claimed that his situation is drawing interest from elsewhere.

Football Insider writes that Aston Villa are considering a move for the Leicester City striker as they look to bolster their attacking ranks in the summer transfer window.

Villa swooped for Youri Tielemans on a free transfer last summer and they could try to repeat that trick with a bargain deal for the out-of-contract Iheanacho too. An exit is expected, but the former Manchester City man will likely have plenty of options if he becomes a free agent.

Best for all?

Speculation over the future of Kelechi Iheanacho has been rife ever since Leicester City were relegated last summer and with no new deal penned, it seems highly likely that he moves on at the end of his contract.

It affords him a fresh start having struggled to impress under Enzo Maresca and that could be just what he needs. The 27-year-old has been a capable striker in the Premier League before and an Aston Villa move would ensure him a return to that level.

A player of his calibre will likely have options far and wide though, so the next move is truly in his hands

For Leicester City, they can perhaps focus on giving more game time to the likes of Tom Cannon. An Iheanacho exit likely makes for a fairly big chunk of the wage bill too, only aiding their persisting financial struggles.

Time will tell just where he ends up, but Iheanacho could do far worse than linking up with Champions League hopefuls Aston Villa.
