Gillingham interested in appointing former player as new boss

Gillingham are interested in Southend United boss Kevin Maher, reports Alan Nixon.

Gillingham are in the hunt for a new manager following their decision to part ways with Stephen Clemence.

The Gills missed out on the League Two play-offs this season and were six points short in the end.

Reporter Nixon has reported on his Patreon page that Maher has emerged on the radar.

Gillingham keen on National League boss

Maher has done a steady job at Southend United over recent times and his team finished in 9th position in the fifth tier. The Shrimpers, like Gillingham, fell short of the play-offs as well.

The 47-year-old spent a large chunk of his playing days at Roots Hall but also featured for the Gills for two years from 2009 to 2011, playing 69 games in all competitions.

He also had stints at Oldham Athletic, Dagenham and Redbridge, Bray Wanderers, Whitehawk and Chelmsford City before he hung up his boots in 2015 and he delved into the coaching world with the latter.

Maher then returned to Southend United as a youth coach before moving to Bristol Rovers July 2019.

He then went back to the Shrimpers in 2021 and hasn’t looked back since.

Gillingham could see him as the man to take them forward into the next campaign as they look to get promoted to League One.

Maher could fit the bill for the Kent club as he knows the club already, has proven himself in the league below and will be ready to make the step up now.

He penned a new contract in December last year so it may be hard to lure him away.
