3 managers Gillingham should consider after Stephen Clemence decision

Gillingham have parted company with Stephen Clemence, as announced by their official club website.

Gillingham are in the hunt for a new manager ahead of next season as they prepare for another campaign in League Two.

The Gills missed out on the play-offs this year and finished 12th after their 2-2 draw with Doncaster Rovers on the final day.

Here is a look at three candidates for their vacant position…

Mark Bonner

He has been available since cutting ties with Cambridge United in November and is an option for Gillingham. At the age of 38, he could be a long-term option for the Kent club as they look to compete at the top end of the table next term.

Bonner guided the U’s to promotion from the fourth tier back in 2021 so knows what it takes to get to League One. He oversaw 201 games during his time at the Abbey Stadium.

Who is this?

Gareth Ainsworth

The 50-year-old worked wonders at Wycombe Wanderers during his spell there from 2012 to 2023. He got the Chairboys into the Championship against the odds back in 2020.

Ainsworth’s most recent managerial spell at QPR didn’t go to plan though and he was sacked last year. The ex-Preston and Port Vale winger may feel he has a point to prove and could be considered by the Gills.

Michael Appleton

The Mancunian may have to drop into the fourth tier for his next job after his tenure at his most recent club Charlton Athletic ended in him being given the chop. Appleton, who is 48-years-old, may see the Gillingham role as a chance to get back into the game ahead of next season.

He has worked at a few clubs in the Football League now like Portsmouth, Blackpool, Blackburn Rovers, Oxford United and Lincoln City and will be weighing up his next move.
