League Two side cast eyes over Portsmouth defender ahead of potential swoop

Colchester United have taken a look at Portsmouth defender Harvey Laidlaw on trial, as per a report by The News.

Colchester United cast their eyes over the youngster last week as they weigh up a potential swoop for him this summer.

Laidlaw, 17, is leaving Fratton Park at the end of this season when his contract expires.

The News report ex-Pompey boss Danny Cowley invited him to train with the U’s.

Portsmouth have made the tough decision not to offer Laidlaw a contract and he has a big decision to make on his future.

He isn’t the only academy man heading out the exit door either, with Mitch Aston, Brian Quarm, Bastian Smith, Malachi Osei-Owusu, Jack Fox, Maxwell Hurst, Kevin Bosaka and Dan Murray also due to depart, as Koby Mottoh awaits his fate.

Laidlaw’s usual position is at left-back and he has risen up through the ranks at Fratton Park.

He has been a regular for the Hampshire outfit at various youth levels over the years and had a loan spell away in non-league at Gosport Borough last year to get some experience under his belt.

The teenager was handed his first-team debut by Cowley during his time in the dugout at Pompey but he hasn’t featured for the senior team since then.

Colchester United could throw him a Football League lifeline but their League Two status isn’t 100% confirmed just yet.

It has been a tough campaign for the Essex outfit and they find themselves sat in 22nd place in the table.

However, they are three points from safety with just two games left so only need a draw from their final two fixtures against Doncaster Rovers and Crewe Alexandra, with Sutton United poised to join Forest Green Rovers in the National League.
