3 long-term managers Barnsley should consider after Neill Collins decision

Barnsley have parted company with Neill Collins following their poor run of form, as announced by their official club website.

Barnsley have placed Martin Devaney in interim charge as they prepare for their final day of the season match against Northampton Town at home.

The Tykes are sat in 5th place in the League One table but risk dropping out of the top six this weekend if they lose and other teams win.

Here is a look at three managers they should look at….

Grant McCann

His Doncaster Rovers side are flying in League Two at the moment and have won nine games on the spin. The ex-Peterborough United and Hull City boss knows what it takes to get out of the third tier after winning the title with the latter back in 2021.

McCann, 44, could be worth a punt by Barnsley as they look to claw themselves back to the Championship. He has done it before and his son, Bayley, plays for the Tykes’ Under-18’s.

Who is this?

Michael Duff

The door has swung open for the Yorkshire outfit to try and bring back Duff. He got them to the play-off final last year before they lost to Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley and he subsequently left when Swansea City came calling.

It didn’t work out for the ex-Cheltenham Town man in South Wales and he was sacked earlier in this campaign. He remains available now and would he be tempted by a potential return?.

Gareth Ainsworth

The 50-year-old spent 11 years in charge at Wycombe Wanderers and guided them to the second tier against the odds back in 2020. He then left for QPR in 2023 but lasted only eight months with the Hoops.

Ainsworth may feel he has a point to prove in the game now and could be worth a look by Barnsley. He worked wonders during his Adams Park days and will be weighing up his options.
