‘Could be a shock’ – Portsmouth vs Wigan Athletic prediction: The72

The72’s writers offer their Portsmouth vs Wigan Athletic prediction ahead of the League One clash on Saturday.

Portsmouth secured their promotion to the Championship last time out after beating Barnsley 3-2. Kusini Yengi, Colby Bishop and Conor Shaughnessy got their goals against the Tykes at Fratton Park.

Former Oxford United man John Mousinho has done a brilliant job in charge of the Hampshire outfit. They can look forward to the return of second tier football in the next campaign.

Portsmouth have a big summer ahead of them now as they look to prepare for life in the league above. There is expected to be both incomings and outgoings in the next transfer window.

As for Wigan Athletic, they find themselves sat in 15th place in the League One table. They were relegated last year but started this term with a points deduction.

Shaun Maloney has steadied the ship at the DW Stadium and will be looking forward to the future. The Latics don’t have much to play for now though.

They won 2-1 away at Lincoln City in their last fixture at the LNER Stadium. Jonny Smith and Charlie Hughes scored their goals against the Imps.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

Portsmouth’s job is done but they could reach 100 points if they win their final two fixtures which is their incentive now.

“John Mousinho won’t want his players to take their foot off the gas but it would be understandable now after such a long season.

Wigan Athletic aren’t doing badly right now and there could be a shock result on the cards here. They have lost only once in their last six and have secured results away at Charlton Athletic and Lincoln City over recent times.

“There are a few players for the Latics who are playing for their futures such as Tom Pearce and Jason Kerr and I think they may get something at Fratton Park.”

“Promoted sides can take their foot off the gas a little once their fate is sealed. Mousinho will be determined for his Portsmouth side not to do that, but it was such an emotional night on Tuesday and with the celebrations that ensued, it could be tricky to get as fired up for this.

Wigan Athletic will be a tough test too. With the right recruitment this summer, they could be one to watch next season as they continue their rebuild under Maloney.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if this ends level, ending Pompey’s hopes of reaching 100 points.”
