Opinion: Charlton Athletic should keep 28-year-old this summer, wanted overseas

Charlton Athletic risk losing Terell Thomas for nothing at the end of this season.

Charlton Athletic have a big decision to make regarding the defender’s long-term future at The Valley.

Thomas, 28, is out of contract when this campaign ends and is due to become a free agent this summer.

The Addicks should tie him down to an extension ahead of next term after his impressive upturn in performances.

It is expected to be a busy few months ahead on the transfer front at Charlton with both comings and goings.

Nathan Jones will be keen on bringing in some more of his own signings but keeping hold of Thomas would be a shrewd decision.

The Addicks have been in solid form recently and the centre-back has been enjoying plenty of game time.

Thomas is a safe pair of hands at the back for Charlton and even if they sign some new defenders and he falls out of favour, he is still a solid enough option to call upon if needed.

He has made 41 appearances in all competitions this season, 35 of which have come in the league.

The Addicks signed him back in 2022 and he played 18 times in his first year. He initially penned a one-year deal with the London club before his stay was extended by a further 12 months last year.

He rose up through the ranks at Arsenal before linking up with Charlton for his first spell there as a youngster in 2009.

Thomas didn’t play for the Addicks’ first-team though and was loaned out to Woking to get some experience before heading out the exit door permanently.

The Saint Lucia international, who has 11 caps under his belt so far in his career, went on to have spells at Wigan AthleticSutton UnitedAFC WimbledonCrewe Alexandra and Reading before re-joining his current club.
