Sunderland casting eyes over Derby County goalkeeper

Sunderland have moved to bring Derby County goalkeeper Lewis Ridd in on trial, reporter James Copley has shared on X.

Sunderland will be among the clubs up and down the country taking a look at potential youth academy additions ahead of the summer.

The Black Cats’ academy is up there with the most productive in the country. But, while bringing talents all the way through their own ranks, they also recruit from other setups to bolster their options.

Now, it seems one player on their radar is goalkeeper Lewis Ridd.

Sunderland fielded a trialist in goal against Huddersfield Town’s youngsters on Wednesday and writing on X, reporter James Copley has confirmed it was Welsh talent Ridd. The 19-year-old is on the books at Derby County after joining from Ipswich Town last summer.

Ridd has spent time on loan with Mickleover Sports this season. They play in the Southern League Premier Division Central.

Who is this?

A new prospect inbound?

Time will tell if Ridd can do enough to earn a deal with Sunderland over his trial stint. He’s spent time in some good academies over the early stages of his career, learning his trade with Ipswich Town and Derby County.

Alongside his Mickleover loan, Ridd has also spent spells with Sudbury United, Bury Town and Brightlingsea Regent, so he’s got some decent senior experience under his belt too.

The fact he’s been freed to head out on trial would suggest he’ll be leaving Derby in the summer. It gives him a chance to catch the eye elsewhere if so, attracting potential suitors before the end of his deal.
