‘Quality’ – Luton Town loan man hailed by EFL boss after impressive spell

Barnsley boss Neill Collins has hailed the ‘quality’ of Luton Town loan man John McAtee.

Barnsley landed the attacker on a temporary basis last summer and he has since impressed for them in League One.

McAtee, 24, scored a brace for the Yorkshire side yesterday in their 3-1 away win at Cambridge United, with Luca Connell getting their other goal.

Collins was delighted with his performance and said after the game, as per a report by the Barnsley Chronicle: “I love what Macca brings to our team. You can see why our fans can relate to him because he plays with spirit and he has quality. He took the first goal well then the second was more what we expect from him.”

McAtee added: “I woke up yesterday and felt really sick. I think it was general bug. I listened to all the advice from the physios. I had a nap and felt better then even better this morning so made my way down and thankfully got some goals.”

McAtee has been a hit with Barnsley in this campaign and has made 37 appearances in all competitions, firing 13 goals and getting three assists.

He is due to return to Luton this summer and they will have a decision to make on what to do with him next.

His chances of breaking into their first-team are likely to depend on what league they find themselves in next term. Rob Edwards’ men are currently fighting for their lives in the Premier League.

McAtee moved to Kenilworth Road in 2022 from Grimsby Town and was loaned out to the Mariners last term. He is yet to play for the Hatters’ first-team in a competitive match.

The Mancunian started his career at Shrewsbury Town and featured twice for their senior team as a youngster before moving on for Scunthorpe United.

He then joined Grimsby in 2021 and scored 16 goals in 39 outings for them to help them gain promotion from the National League before Luton came calling.

McAtee’s future is up in the air heading into the next transfer window but at the moment his focus will be on helping Barnsley go up to the Championship.

They needed their win over Cambridge and will be keen to build some momentum now. Next up is a trip to The Valley to lock horns with Charlton Athletic.
