Manchester United target Ipswich Town manager as potential Erik ten Hag successor

Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna is emerging as a contender to become the next Manchester United manager, Football Insider has claimed.

Ipswich Town named McKenna as their manager in December 2021, bringing him in from Manchester United.

The Northern Irishman had never worked as a senior boss prior to his move to Portman Road. He was part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s backroom team with the Red Devils having previously worked as U18s boss.

Since heading to East Anglia, McKenna has emerged has emerged as one of the brightest young bosses in the game. He led Ipswich Town to promotion from League One and back in the Championship, they’re top of the table and in with a serious chance of a second consecutive promotion.

McKenna has drawn admiring glances before and now, Football Insider claims his former employees are holding a strong interest.

They claim Manchester United view him as a future manager and he is a strong contender to become their next boss if Erik Ten Hag is to depart. Their interest is ‘concrete’ and are impressed by his character and profile as well as his role in the transformation of Ipswich Town.

Who is this?

McKenna’s work at Ipswich Town has been fantastic and he looks to be a manager set for a future at a high level in the game.

However, given his previous affiliation with Manchester United, it does feel like an easy link, even if still a significant one. A move there would be a huge step up for McKenna, and a lot of pieces would have to fall into place before it came to fruition.

For now though, the 37-year-old will have a laser focus on the task at hand at Portman Road. Ipswich are in with a serious chance of a remarkable rise to the Premier League with Monday night’s last-gasp win over Southampton keeping them top of the pile.

Six games remain for Town as they battle with Leicester City and Leeds United for one of the top two spots.
