3 goalkeepers Wigan Athletic should target amid Sunderland’s Sam Tickle interest

Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Sam Tickle has emerged as one of the EFL’s brightest talents in between the sticks, and his abilities have caught the eye.

Wigan Athletic shot-stopper Tickle emerged as the Latics’ new no.1 at the start of the current League One campaign. He’s been a mainstay in between the sticks, managing 16 clean sheets in 47 outings.

His performances haven’t gone unnoticed though. As per reporter Alan Nixon, Sunderland are eyeing the 22-year-old as a potential replacement for Anthony Patterson, and it could mean Shaun Maloney needs to bring in a new ‘keeper this summer.

With that said, here are three goalkeepers Wigan Athletic should consider as potential Tickle replacements…

Callum Burton – Plymouth Argyle

27-year-old Burton is currently third choice at Plymouth Argyle but could be a good option nonetheless. When Michael Cooper suffered ACL damage, Burton slotted into the starting XI and played a key role in getting the Pilgrims over the line in their title-winning season.

An exit seems likely given his lack of game time in the Championship. He’s proven his ability in the third-tier before and as a free agent, he could be a really shrewd pickup.

Owen Goodman – Crystal Palace

Reporter Nixon has also said that 20-year-old Goodman could be poised for a League One loan after his strong spell with Colchester United in League Two. While not a permanent replacement for Tickle, the Crystal Palace youngster could be a solid target nonetheless.

He’s been a busy man in goal for the U’s and has proven to be a bright prospect in between the sticks.

Who is this?

Luke Southwood – Cheltenham Town

Last but not least is another of the EFL’s busier ‘keepers in Cheltenham Town man Southwood. He too sees his contract run out this summer and a chance to play in a stronger team could show everyone just how capable the former Reading man is in goal.

The Northern Irishman is 26 and has the best years of his career ahead of him. A move to a more upwardly-mobile club would be thoroughly deserved for Southwood.
