‘Wasted at the back’ – EFL pundit says Leeds United man is playing in the wrong position

Leeds United’s Ethan Ampadu should be playing in midfield, according to pundit Guy Branston.

Leeds United have been using the Wales international as a centre-back alongside Joe Rodon over recent times as they eye promotion from the Championship.

Ampadu, 23, is versatile and can play in midfield as well if needed for Daniel Farke’s side.

Branston, who played for the likes of Rotherham United, Sheffield Wednesday and Bradford City as a defender, has written in the Football League Paper (31.03.24, page 39): “I think a player of Ethan’s quality is wasted at the back.

As a head coach or sporting director looking at him, I’d always want him in and around that defensive midfield position.

“I’d want him just in front of the back four and, with his ball-playing capabilities, I’d want him joining in attacks. I always thought he’d end up being a No.8 when he was younger, because he had a lot of legs. I still think that’s an undervalued aspect of his game.”

Leeds United ace should be playing higher up the pitch

Ampadu has been a great signing for Leeds this season and the fact he can play multiple position make him a really useful asset to have.

The ex-England youth international rose up through the academy ranks at Exeter City and played 13 times for their first-team as a teenager before Chelsea snapped him up.

He went on to make 12 appearances for the Premier League outfit and also had loan spells away from Stamford Bridge at RB Leipzig, Sheffield United, Venezia and Spezia to get some game time under his belt.

Leaving Chelsea has been a shrewd decision by Ampadu. He fell into their trap of being loaned out every season and has now found a home at Leeds where he is guaranteed regular football.

He has laid down roots at Elland Road and has become a real fans’ favourite.

Branston is correct in that Ampadu should probably be playing in midfield with his quality on the ball. However, he is one of the Whites’ best defenders as well so moving higher up the pitch could be something for next term.

Leeds are back in action this evening with a home clash against Hull City. Farke’s men drew 2-2 away at Watford last time out.

The Tigers were beaten 2-0 at home by Stoke City and their chances of making the play-offs are up in the air now. Liam Rosenior’s side have won away at Leicester City and Southampton in this campaign so are capable of producing a surprise result.
