‘They need results’ – Sunderland vs Blackburn Rovers prediction: The72

The72’s writers offer their Sunderland vs Blackburn Rovers prediction ahead of the Championship clash on Monday afternoon.

Sunderland come into their Easter Monday clash with Blackburn Rovers off the back of their first win since Mike Dodds became interim boss. They beat a lacklustre Cardiff City 2-0 on the road with Adil Aouchiche and Jobe Bellingham on the scoresheet.

The Black Cats sit 12th in the Championship table and look set to finish around mid-table this season.

Blackburn Rovers meanwhile suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Championship promotion hopefuls Ipswich Town. It was a positive performance from John Eustace’s side but the result eluded them.

As a result, they’re still without a win under their new boss. Only three points separates them and the relegation zone with seven games left to play.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

James Ray

“That win on Friday could be a real source of confidence for this young Sunderland group. It’s been a pretty dismal season on Wearside but they’ll be hopeful of ending with some strong results.

“For Blackburn Rovers, they can be pleased with their efforts against Ipswich but frankly, they need results, and they’re not getting them. As long as it stays like that, they’re in serious danger of a drop to League One.

“I think they’ve got what it takes to frustrate the hosts here but ultimately, I think the win they need will elude them once more. This might end goalless.”

Who is this?

Jacob Hackett

“Having returned to winning ways in their last encounter, Sunderland have put their woeful run of form to bed and now have the opportunity to end the season on a high.

“They face a Blackburn outfit that seemingly lacks confidence, without a win in their last ten in all competitions, and back on home soil they will fancy their chances of recording back-to-back wins.

“Rovers now face a battle for safety and the pressure will be on Eustace’s side to grind out a result at the Stadium of Light, this could be a beneficial factor for the Black Cats.

“I am backing the hosts to record a fairly routine win on this occasion, but I can see it being a narrow one.”
