Sunderland targeting move for Wigan Athletic man

Sunderland are interested in Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Sam Tickle, reports Alan Nixon.

Sunderland are keen to lure the stopper up to the Championship at the end of this season.

Tickle, 22, has made the number one spot his own at the DW Stadium over recent times and has caught the eye in League One.

According to reporter Nixon on his Patreon page, the Black Cats are keen on snapping him up this summer.

Sunderland could Tickle as a long-term option for them between the sticks.

The England youth international, who has represented the Three Lions at Under-21 level, is being tipped for a bright future in the game.

He is under contract at Wigan until June 2026 meaning they are under no pressure to cash in on him in the next transfer window unless an offer that they can’t refuse comes in for his signature. However, interest from higher up the football pyramid is inevitable after his impressive campaign.

Tickle has made 46 appearances in all competitions for Shaun Maloney’s side this term and has kept 16 clean sheets.

He was on the books of the Latics’ academy from 2012 to 2018 before he was released. The stopper then played for Pilkington in the Cheshire Football League before moving back.

Tickle then had loan spells away in non-league at Warrington Rylands and Nantwich Town to get some more experience under his belt before breaking into the first-team.

Sunderland are the latest club to be linked with the Warrington-born man with it looking like Wigan will face a battle to keep him.

The Black Cats won 2-0 away at Cardiff City on Friday and face Blackburn Rovers at home tomorrow as they look to end the season on a high under Mike Dodds.
