Sunderland place former Sheffield United boss ‘top’ of managerial wish list, reporter claims

Sunderland have identified Paul Heckingbottom as a serious potential managerial candidate for the summer, reports Alan Nixon.

Sunderland are in the hunt for a new permanent boss to replace Michael Beale.

Mike Dodds has been in caretaker charge at the Stadium of Light over recent times.

According to reporter Nixon on his Patreon page, Heckingbottom is ‘top’ of the Black Cats’ wish list as they weigh up their options.

Sunderland could see the Yorkshireman as someone to guide them forward into next season. It has been a disappointing campaign for the Black Cats and they are 13 points off the Championship play-offs.

Heckingbottom knows what it takes to get promoted from the Premier League after getting previous club Sheffield United up automatically last year.

The 46-year-old played for Sunderland during his playing days as a youngster and also had stints at Bradford City, Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley.

He hung up his boots in 2012 and started his managerial career with the latter.

Heckingbottom won the League One play-offs and the EFL Trophy during his time in the dugout at Oakwell.

However, he then had spells at Leeds United and Hibernian that didn’t go to plan but he reinstated his reputation during his last stint at Sheffield United, despite his tenure at Bramall Lane ending in the sack last December.

The Barnsley-born man has since been considering his options and the Sunderland vacancy could be an opportunity for him to jump back into the game later this year.

They are back in action tomorrow with a home clash against Blackburn Rovers as they look to build on their 2-0 away win at Cardiff City on Friday.
