‘Might fall short’ – Middlesbrough vs Sheffield Wednesday prediction: The72

The72’s writers offer their Middlesbrough vs Sheffield Wednesday prediction ahead of the Championship clash on Monday afternoon.

Middlesbrough come into their Easter Monday clash with Sheffield Wednesday after salvaging a late point against Southampton on Good Friday. The Saints led for much of the game thanks to an early Adam Armstrong goal but Emmanuel Latte Lath equalised at the death.

The draw leaves Boro 10th in the Championship table and unbeaten in five. They’re nine points off the play-offs.

Sheffield Wednesday meanwhile drew with Swansea City having led 1-0 through Bailey Cadamarteri. The point was a valuable one though all the same, as they’re now level on points with 21st placed Birmingham City.

The Owls are winless in three Championship games and after salvaging a chance at relegation, they’ll be determined not to fall short now.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

James Ray

Middlesbrough‘s home form has not been strong and that could give Sheffield Wednesday hope. The Owls have shown they can pick up big results on the road and they can certainly get another here.

“After that winning run though, I’m just a little concerned that the visitors might start to slow and lose momentum at the worst time. Danny Rohl will have a task on his hands to keep the squad energised, especially with such a quick turnaround.

“They might fall short of the win they desperately need, but I’ll say Wednesday claim another valuable point in their fight for survival.”

Who is this?

Jacob Hackett

“Unbeaten in their last five, it is perhaps the worst time for Wednesday to face Boro with an instant return to League One now a serious possibility should they not turn their form back around.

“Carrick’s men have overcome their poor mid-season patch and look to be ending the season on a high, back on home soil they will certainly fancy their chances of extending their run.

“The Owls did well to gain a point against Swansea, somewhat recovering from their 6-0 battering at the hands of Ipswich prior to the international break, but they face another tough test at the Riverside and it is hard to see them returning to Sheffield with a result.

“My prediction is a routine win for the hosts.”
