The72’s writers offer their Plymouth Argyle vs Bristol City prediction ahead of their Championship clash on Monday afternoon.

Plymouth Argyle head into this fixture with Bristol City off the back of a 2-1 defeat on their travels against Norwich City, stretching their run of games without a victory to five.

The Pilgrims had initially taken the lead through top scorer Morgan Whittaker with just 10 minutes on the clock, but Josh Sargent’s strike was followed up by an Ashley Phillips own goal in the second half to send Ian Foster’s side home empty-handed. They now sit 20th in the table, two points above the drop zone with seven games left to play.

Bristol City, on the other hand, beat promotion hopefuls Leicester City 1-0 on home soil in their last outing to make it two wins from their last three.

Goalkeeper Max O’Leary was in fine form to keep the Foxes out, and it all paid off when Anis Mehmeti struck a clean finish in the 73rd minute to break the deadlock and secure victory for the Robins. Liam Manning’s men occupy 13th spot in the Championship, 11 points clear of the drop zone but 14 points away from the top six with another second tier campaign almost confirmed for next season.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

Jacob Hackett

“It is certainly a worrying time for Plymouth supporters who at one point looked to be comfortably staying up, but now face a real battle to avoid the drop.

“With no win in their last five, four of which have been losses, Foster’s side are in desperate need of an upturn in form if they are to avoid an instant return to League One.

“The Robins look as though they have now put their poor form to bed, and they will be brimming with confidence after their display against Leicester, so they will no doubt be eyeing another three points when they travel to Home Park.

“This one is likely to be a competitive fixture, but I can see the away side piling more pressure onto Plymouth and handing them yet another defeat on Monday.”

Who is this?

James Ray

“That was a great win for Bristol City on Good Friday but once again, it leaves you asking why they can’t produce these impressive performances on a more regular basis. If they can, they could be a real force.

“That isn’t the case though, and after such an impressive win, it would be typical of them to lose to a struggling Plymouth Argyle side.

“The Pilgrims are really struggling though, and they simply have to turn around their form. Home Park is far from the fortress it was earlier in the season and on their current trajectory, I think they might be relegated.

“A draw here won’t be a bad result, but it won’t do much for their survival hopes.”
