‘Against all odds’ – Bolton Wanderers vs Reading prediction: The72

The72’s writers offer their Bolton Wanderers vs Reading prediction ahead of the League One clash on Monday afternoon.

Bolton Wanderers saw their automatic promotion hopes take another blow on Good Friday. While they played out a 0-0 draw with Stevenage, Derby County won again to move six points clear in 2nd place.

It could mean Ian Evatt’s side are condemned to the lottery of the League One play-offs once more, though they hold a game in hand on the Rams.

Reading meanwhile claimed another valuable win in their fight to stave off relegation. After a total of 14 points deducted, the Royals are seven points clear of the drop and 17th in the League One table.

They made it back-to-back wins with a 1-0 victory over Northampton Town on Friday afternoon.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

James Ray

“One win in five for Bolton Wanderers has seen them lose valuable ground in the top two fight and it could mean they face the play-offs once more. It’s a fate they can still avoid though, so they can’t afford to throw in the towel now.

Reading will be a tougher test than their league position suggests too. They’ve done brilliantly to put some distance between themselves and the relegation fight against all odds.

“However, I do think the Royals will be beaten here. Bolton could claim a valuable win to keep the pressure on Derby.”

Who is this?

Jacob Hackett

“Having not won in their past two outings, pressure is now piling onto Bolton if they are to achieve the top two finish that they have been fighting for all season.

“Not only have the Whites failed to win in their last two, they have also failed to hit the back of the net, and they are in need of a huge response against Reading in order to reignite their promotion beliefs.

“The Royals are unlikely to prove a pushover, however, having clawed themselves away from trouble in recent weeks. Two wins on the bounce stand them in good stead for their trip to the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

“I can see Reading frustrating Bolton on Monday, I think it could be a scrappy draw.”
