Watford vs Leeds United: 5 players who could dictate the game tonight

Leeds United travel south to Hertfordshire to face Tom Cleverley’s Watford today. Here, we pick out five players who could dictate what could be an interesting clash.

Leeds United will be looking continue a massively impressive 2024 to date when they face Watford. They’re yet to taste defeat in the league this calendar year and have propelled themselves to the top of the Championship table.

Daniel Farke’s side overcame a solid Millwall outfit last time out in the Championship. Goals from Wilfred Gnonto and Dan James gave them a 2-0 victory over their London rivals.

Next up is a Watford outfit who responded to the interim appointment of Tom Cleverley with a close 1-0 win over Birmingham City. This will be the temporary boss’ first home game at the helm.

In the last game between these two, a Valerian Ismael-led Hornets side folded at Elland Road, losing by a 3-0 scoreline in late September. They will be hoping to pose a tougher challenge to the Whites this time around as they look to move up from 13th.

Here, we look at five players who could dictate Watford vs Leeds United this evening…

Joel Piroe

Recent team news from Farke’s pre-Watford news conference suggests that Georginio Rutter is being considered as part of the squad and looking to get some minutes. The likelihood of this would mean the promotion of Joel Piroe back into Farke’s staring XI while Rutter starts as a substitute.

Despite spending a lot of the recent games on the bench, summer buy Piroe still has 11 goals to his name. Whilst not as much of a creative source as Rutter, the Dutchman is still more than capable of replacing the French youngster as that link between midfield and Patrick Bamford.

Mileta Rajovic

Danish striker Rajovic is Watford‘s leading scorer this season with nine goals. If he returns to the side, he will need to be on top of his game against a Leeds United side that gives very little away defensively.

The 24-year-old has shown that he can be a handful for opposition defenders, and it will need to be a key aspect of his game against Farke’s side. Living off crumbs, he can’t afford to be wasteful in front of goal if the hosts are going to get anything out of the game.

Joe Rodon

Tottenham Hotspur loanee Rodon has proven to be an astute signing for the Whites. Playing at the heart of the Leeds United backline, he has helped to solidify what had been a questionable part of previous Whites’ outfits. Whether is alongside Ethan Ampadu, Pascal Struijk or Liam Cooper, Wales international Rodon has looked solid.

He is a vital part of the defensive efforts but is more than comfortable on the ball too, so expect to see a lot of him on the ball.

Who is this?

Daniel Bachmann

Goalkeeper Bachmann has made the no.1 jersey his own at Vicarage Road of late. In 19 appearances, the 29-year-old has kept seven clean sheets. More of that will be of importance against a Leeds side that has scored 70 goals so far this season.

Farke’s men press high and they attack from both out wide and through the central channels. Bachmann will need to marshal his defenders and face up to the fact that he will be called upon to make saves. His performance will be key if Watford are going to get anything out of this game.

Crysencio Summerville

Dutch youngster Summerville has been somewhat subdued of late after a sparkling start to Leeds United‘s Championship campaign. Still, he leads the scoring charts at Elland Road with 15 goals and eight assists.

Despite not being amongst the goals in recent games, he still commands a lot of attention from defenders who are wary of the threat he poses. Summerville has magic feet at times, and he isn’t scared of running at defenders and into the area.
