Two wingers out: Middlesbrough team news and predicted XI to face Southampton

Middlesbrough take on Southampton at St. Mary’s later this afternoon. Here we take a look at the team news and predict the XI for the away side.

Middlesbrough are 10th in the table and seven points outside the top six. They are in need of points and a consistent run of results in order to make a push for a play-off place.

Michael Carrick’s side have won three and drawn one of their last four in the Championship and so are in good form. They will be looking to maintain that momentum when they visit Southampton today.

However, they will have to do that without the help of two of their star players. Expected to miss the game is forward Marcus Forss. He came after off injured in the 0-0 draw with Blackburn Rovers.

“Obviously Marcus came off. He missed going away. It’s another one at the moment we’re assessing and waiting. He’s been scanned and seeing different people, so we’ll see how bad it looks. He felt a tightness in his hamstring. We’re just giving him as much time as possible,” Carrick recently told The Northern Echo.

Along with Forss, winger on the other Riley McGree is also a doubt for the game against Southampton. The Australian limped off on international duty with the Socceroos, with Carrick stating: “Riley has not been back in the country long, so it’s assessing it, scanning it and seeing where he is and seeing if we can get him back involved.”

They are both likely to join Tommy Smith, Darragh Lenihan, Dael Fry, Josh Coburn and Hayden Hackney on the treatment table.

Middlesbrough have started with a 5-3-2 formation of late, but given there will be no Forss and no Coburn, they could pivot to a 5-2-3 formation with Jones and Silvera on the flanks and Latte Lath through the centre.

Alternatively, Silvera and Latte Lath could play as a two up front. Jones could then be deployed at right-wing-back with Ayling moving to the centre, and McNair or Clarke dropping to the bench, and Finn Azaz or Sam Greenwood coming into the number 10 spot behind the striker duo.
