Derby County host Blackpool this afternoon in a crucial encounter at the top end of League One with the Rams hoping to extend their lead above the play-off spots and their visitors hoping to break into them.

Derby County come into this weekend’s clash with Blackpool after a disappointing 1-0 defeat away from home against Northampton Town. Sam Hoskins’ first-half effort proved the difference as the Rams failed to crank up the pressure on those around them at the top of the table.

Blackpool also lost their last outing 1-0, with Wigan Athletic getting the better of them at the DW Stadium. Scott Smith scored the winner for the Latics, leaving a three-point gap between the Tangerines and the play-off spots.

Now, ahead of this afternoon’s clash, here are five players who could dictate Derby County vs Blackpool

James Collins

Back from injury ahead of Blackpool’s visit, top scorer Collins will be raring to go on his return to the squad this weekend.

The 33-year-old was in fine form before his spell on the sidelines, with 18 goals in all competitions over the course of 40 matches. He will be hoping to add to that tally as soon as possible following his stint out.

Karamoko Dembele

Youngster Dembele has been a standout performer for the Seasiders this season while on loan from French side Stade Brestois. He’s managed seven goals and 12 assists in 40 appearances in all competitions.

The 21-year-old winger has excelled in League One, and could look to cause the Rams some serious problems this afternoon.

Curtis Nelson

Nelson has been a brilliant addition to the Derby County squad this season having emerged as one of the most consistent defenders in the league. He’s perhaps someone that Blackpool perhaps wish they had kept hold of too.

The centre-back will be determined to keep his former side out this weekend, and if he is at his best then it is bound to be a tough afternoon for the visitors’ frontline.

Who is this?

Jordan Rhodes

Veteran goalscorer Rhodes leads the way for the Seasiders this season with 15 goals to his name having enjoyed a stellar season since dropping down to the third tier.

He is set to be locked in battle with the aforementioned Nelson and it could be pivotal to the outcome of the game.

Nathaniel Mendez-Laing

The man with the most assists in the division, Mendez-Laing has been terrific for Derby County this season and a lot of the Rams’ success is due to his performances.

With 15 assists and eight goals to his name in league action this campaign, the Guatemala international certainly has the ability to be the difference maker.
