Sheffield Wednesday set for imminent Callum Paterson decision

Sheffield Wednesday are set to decide whether to include Callum Paterson in their final 25-man EFL squad today, manager Danny Rohl has said.

Sheffield Wednesday have been unable to call on the services of utility man Paterson since Boxing Day. He’s been out with a knee problem and has been left off the Owls’ EFL squad list as a result.

Wednesday and all other EFL sides have until 5pm today (Thursday) to name their final 25-man squad for the remainder of the season. And as that deadline nears, the Championship relegation candidates will have to make a decision over Paterson.

As quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post, manager Danny Rohl explained that the versatile Scotsman is still injured. And, if he’s not going to be available, they will proceed with 24 players in their squad.

“Callum Paterson is still injured and I have one free space so everyone who can play and train is now on the list.

“It depends,” Rohl replied when asked if Paterson could be included today.

“We have to look now. It’s not so easy but we will try it. If Callum Paterson is not available we go with the 24 players.”

If not included, it would bring a premature end to the 29-year-old’s season. He’s played 21 times across all competitions and has chipped in with two assists in the process, but injury means he hasn’t featured in 2024.

Who is this?

Fingers crossed…

It seems Sheffield Wednesday fans won’t have long to wait before they find out Paterson’s fate. As the 5pm deadline nears, those at Hillsborough will be weighing up their next step with the versatile star still on the comeback trail.

There’s no doubt that Paterson would be a valuable presence in the squad. Someone who can play in as many roles as him is always going to have a part to play, especially as we enter the business end of the season.

A player of his character will be valuable in the dressing room too. Paterson has plenty of experience at this level and in relegation battles, making him an influential figure on and off the pitch.

Sheffield Wednesday sit 23rd in the Championship table coming into this weekend’s clash with Swansea City. They’ll be determined to bounce back from defeats to Leeds United and Ipswich Town prior to the break.
