Revelation emerges over Birmingham City summer signing’s contract situation

Birmingham City winger Koji Miyoshi’s two-year deal also includes the option to extend his stay by a further 12 months, BirminghamLive has said.

Birmingham City added Japanese ace Miyoshi to their ranks last summer, bringing him in on a free transfer following the end of his time with Belgian club Royal Antwerp.

The winger, who turns 27 today, has managed six goals and five assists in 40 games across his debut campaign.

Upon arrival at St. Andrew’s, it was announced that Miyoshi had penned a two-year deal, running until the summer of 2025. Now though, a new detail in his contract has emerged from BirminghamLive.

They report that the Blues hold an option to extend Miyoshi’s stay by a further 12 months if they wish, effectively securing his future until 2026. It comes as player contracts come to the fore as the end of the 2023/24 Championship season moves closer to a dramatic conclusion.

Who is this?

No short-term concern

If there wasn’t an extension option for Miyoshi, there might have been some desire to secure a new agreement sooner rather than later. Those in the last 12 months of their deals are prone to drawing interest from elsewhere.

However, with Birmingham City effectively able to tie down his services until 2026, there will be no short-term concern over losing him on the cheap. It won’t prevent clubs from eyeing the winger, but it means they’ll still have to pay a decent fee to recruit him if they do want to make a move.

It means Miyoshi can remain fully focused on maintaining his place in the Blues’ starting XI. He’s been a regular starter in his first season with the club, with 23 of 35 Championship outings coming from the get-go.

He’ll be determined to end the season in impressive form as the club battles against relegation. Six games without a win leaves Birmingham City 21st in the Championship table, only out of the bottom three on goal difference.
