Opinion: 23-year-old star would be Leeds United’s perfect Premier League signing this summer

Leeds United have been frequently linked with Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley, and rumours have emerged once more in recent days.

Leeds United were said to have seen a bid of £10m rejected for O’Riley in the summer. The midfielder has since enjoyed one of the best campaigns of his career to date, notching 11 goals and 15 assists in 39 games across all competitions for Celtic.

Unsurprisingly, such form and a break into the Denmark national squad has seen his stock rise.

Despite that, summer admirers Leeds remain keen. GiveMeSport recently reported that O’Riley is expected to be in demand in the transfer window and a move to the Premier League is a possibility. Celtic could be tempted to cash in too, with the Whites alongside Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford in eyeing the midfielder.

It remains to be seen just how this season ends. But, if Leeds United are promoted from the Championship, O’Riley could be their perfect summer addition.

Who is this?

A statement signing

O’Riley has been of high profile interest. Not only are reputable talent-spotters Brighton and Brentford keen, but Spanish giants Atletico Madrid saw an offer for the 23-year-old knocked back in the January transfer window.

That goes to show just how highly the midfielder is rated, and why it would be a statement addition for Leeds United this summer.

There’s no doubting the pulling power of the Elland Road outfit though. Their home ground is filled with passionate supporters every week and with ambitious ownership in place, they’ll be determined to consolidate their place in the top-flight and move up the division if they win promotion this season.

That is a big if though. Missing out on a rise from the Championship would almost certainly spell and end to their hopes of signing O’Riley you would think. He looks a player destined for the top and after 26 goal contributions from midfield, he’s a player capable of making that step up.

For Leeds United, he’d add a potent goal threat from midfield. The prospect of him linking up with mercurial talents like Georginio Rutter and Crysencio Summerville is exciting, and one that would likely strike fear into top-flight defences.

O’Riley could be the perfect signing for Daniel Farke and co this summer, but they must return to the Premier League to give themselves a chance of bringing him in.
