Hughes, 20, has made 44 appearances in all competitions in this campaign, 36 of which have come in League One, and he has scored three goals from the back.

Hughes is under contract at Wigan until June 2028 meaning they are under no pressure to cash in on him this summer.

However, their resolve could be tested in an offer came in from a top flight club like Brentford or West Ham as it may be hard for them to stand in the player’s way of a big move.

The prospect was on the books of the academies at Manchester City and Liverpool before joining the Latics in 2017.

He has since risen up through the ranks of his current club and was handed his first professional deal in 2021.

Hughes made his senior debut in January 2022 in an EFL Trophy clash against Arsenal Under-21’s and hasn’t looked back since.

He has become one of their most prized assets and Brentford and West Ham could see him as one for the future.

Wigan have a couple of bright prospects right now, including goalkeeper Sam Tickle, and they have done some great work behind the scenes over recent times.

Shaun Maloney’s men are sat in 12th place in the third tier table with seven fixtures left to play. Their points deduction earlier this term has meant that they haven’t been able to mount a serious play-off push.

The North West outfit are back in action on Friday at home to Burton Albion following the international break. They then have an away trip to Cambridge United next Monday.
