Southampton rivalling Everton and Tottenham for England youth international

Southampton are one of many clubs eyeing a summer move for goalkeeper Douglas Lukjanciks, according to a report from Mail Online.

Southampton are renowned for their academy system. Many players have emerged through their youth setup and gone onto play for huge clubs and for their respective national teams.

Luke Shaw, Adam Lallana, Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, and even further back with the likes of Alan Shearer and Matt Le Tissier will all have the Saints academy to thank for playing a huge part in their careers.

Whilst the Saints target promotion back to the Premier League as a main priority, there will be those behind the scenes looking further into the future.

Incomings and outgoings are expected at St. Mary’s this summer, and one player who they are monitoring ahead of a potential summer swoop is England youth international Lukjanciks according to Mail Online.

He is just 16 years old but has consistently played above his age group and is set to sign for Everton as a scholar this summer. However, with a deal yet to be finalised, Southampton are keen.

However, they do face competition from Tottenham and Aston Villa in the Premier League, as well as German duo Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig, as well as French Ligue 1 side Marseille.

One for the future

It is hard to say what club Lukjanciks should choose. The Saints have a brilliant track-record of promoting youth and giving youth a chance, perhaps more so than the other sides linked.

However, the teenager may prefer to move to a more established top flight club. Even if the Saints secure promotion, there is less of a chance of staying up than the likes of Aston Villa and Spurs in the Premier League or the interested teams from overseas.

It seems likely that Everton would get their man at this stage. Southampton’s best chance of getting a deal done for the goalkeeper would be if they are plying their trade in the top tier though, as opposed to if they remain in the Championship.
