Opinion: Bayern Munich development could be cause for Ipswich Town concern this summer

Ipswich Town will have become used to manager Kieran McKenna attracting admiring glances for his work at Portman Road over recent seasons.

Ipswich Town brought McKenna in from Manchester United, handing him a first shot at senior management. Experienced heads struggled to improve their fortunes but the gamble taken on the Northern Irish rookie has paid off in a big way.

He led the Tractor Boys back up from League One in impressive fashion and upon the return to the Championship, many tipped Town to catch the eye.

Few would have expected them to be 3rd in the Championship table with just a handful of games left though. Ipswich Town have been right in the fight towards the top of the division for the duration of the campaign and having recovered from a winter blip, they’re now only a point off top.

Such success is largely down to McKenna. As a result, you’d expect him to draw interest this summer, regardless of how the promotion push ends.

One club to have been linked with the Ipswich Town boss is Brighton & Hove Albion. The Seagulls are meticulous and forward-thinking with their appointments and current boss Roberto De Zerbi has emerged as one of the top targets for Bayern Munich and their soon-to-be-vacant managerial position if they can’t bring in Xabi Alonso from Bayer Leverkusen.

It’s a development that could prove to be a headache for Ipswich too.

Who is this?

Interest in McKenna

If Brighton were to lose De Zerbi this summer – be it to Bayern Munich or someone else – few would be surprised if they turned to McKenna as a potential replacement.

As a young, up-and-coming coach who plays attractive football and invests in a wider philosophy at his football club, McKenna is an ideal fit for the Brighton job. Previous admirers Crystal Palace have since named a new boss too, potentially paving the way for the Seagulls to swoop in for the Northern Irishman.

Ipswich Town are an ambitious club. They’re determined to return to their previous heights of Premier League football and McKenna is a key part of their aims to do so. However, interest in him after such success is inevitable, and if someone like Brighton comes calling, it could be hard to bat away their attempts to lure him to the AMEX Stadium.

De Zerbi’s strong links with the Bayern job should be food for thought at Ipswich Town. McKenna is bound to draw attention and a vacant role at Brighton may well be one he is targeted for.
