‘Lot of potential’ – Hull City boss Liam Rosenior on latest plans for summer signing

Hull City boss Liam Rosenior has said James Furlong is ‘one for the future’ following his arrival last summer.

Hull City swooped to sign the left-back from Brighton and Hove Albion last year but he has only made one competitive appearance for the Championship side this season.

Furlong, 21, featured for the Tigers in their FA Cup defeat away at Birmingham City but picked an injury in that game.

Rosenior has provided an update on the Tigers’ plans for the youngster, as per a report by HullLive: “Our plan for James when we signed him was as a development player. He’s still only 21-years-old. We signed him as someone with a lot of potential who at the right time if it was the right we would put him in the team.

“It’s taken him time to learn and adapt to the way that we work, but you can see his adaptation is getting better and better.

“I felt for him with his injury because that set him back after a really good performance at Birmingham (in the FA Cup), but he’s another one for the future.”

Who is this?

One for the future at Hull City

Furlong penned a contract running until June 2026 when he joined last year.

He faces competition for a place in the starting XI with Ryan Giles and Matty Jacob.

Hull have a decision on what to do with him in the next transfer window, whether that be keep hold of him for depth or let him leave on loan to get some regular game time.

Furlong would benefit more from playing senior football as opposed to with the Tigers’ development squad in the next campaign.

He started his career with spells in the academies at St Joseph’s Boys, Bray Wanderers and Shamrock Rovers before moving over to England in 2019 when Brighton came calling.

The Republic of Ireland youth international played once for the Seagulls and was loaned out to Motherwell last term to boost his development. He played 16 matches for the Scottish Premiership outfit before heading back to the AMEX Stadium.

Hull are back in action this Friday with a home clash against Stoke City as they look to hit the ground running following the international break.

The Tigers have been away in Turkey for a training camp and Furlong got some minutes under his belt against the Curacao national team in a friendly last week along with the likes of Aaron Connolly, Adama Traore and Billy Sharp.
