John Mousinho watches Northampton Town star as Portsmouth eye possible summer move

Portsmouth keen on Northampton Town loan star Marc Leonard once again with John Mousinho watching him against Derby County, as per the Daily Record.

Portsmouth have been on the trail of Scottish midfielder Leonard before. Football Transfers claimed back in February that the League One side were eyeing a summer move after failing to sign him prior to this season.

Since then, the Brighton & Hove Albion loanee has continued to flourish with Northampton Town. It’s put him on the radars of Championship clubs with transfer guru Fabrizio Romano linking Preston North End, Plymouth Argyle and Swansea City earlier this month.

Now, fresh claims have emerged over Pompey’s interest in the 22-year-old.

The Daily Record reports that Portsmouth boss Mousinho was in attendance of Northampton’s clash with Derby County at the weekend, casting eyes over Leonard as the Cobblers beat the promotion hopefuls 1-0.

The report also mentions Cardiff City as another admirer of Leonard.

Who is this?

Destined for a step up?

Leonard’s contract situation ultimately means that parent club Brighton are in control of what comes next for the midfielder. He’s under contract until the summer of 2025 and the Seagulls hold a one-year extension option.

Regardless of what they have planned though, it seems inevitable that step up awaits next season. The constant flow of players from the academy to the first-team at Brighton means a breakthrough there can’t even be ruled out.

At the very least though, expect Leonard to be playing in the Championship. He’s taken League One in his stride and a step up awaits.

Portsmouth may well be able to offer him that. They’re five points clear at the top of the third-tier table with a game in hand on Derby County and look on course to return to the second-tier as league winners.

That could make Pompey an attractive option for Leonard as Mousinho and co try to tempt him to Fratton Park once again.
