3 Joe Wildsmith replacements Derby County should consider amid Premier League and Championship interest

Derby County goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith has enjoyed the best spell of his career to date since joining the Rams at the beginning of last season, and his performances have drawn attention from Premier League and Championship outfits.

Derby County goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith has enjoyed the best spell of his career to date since joining the Rams at the beginning of last season, and his performances have drawn attention from Premier League and Championship outfits.

Derby County have three first-team shot-stoppers on their books. Wildsmith is alongside Josh Vickers and the lesser spotted Scott Loach in competition for a starting spot in between the sticks.

The League One outfit face a reshuffle of their goalkeeper department this summer, however, with both Wildsmith and Loach out of contract and Sky Sports reporting interest from both the top flight and second tier in their current number one after he turned down a contract extension in the summer.

With the 28-year-old set to assess his options, the Rams could now do with considering some potential replacements. Here, we put forward three goalkeepers that Derby County should keep in mind…

Marek Rodak

Starting off with a Premier League option, Fulham’s Rodak is out of contract this summer and may be keen on departing Craven Cottage due to his lack of game time.

The 27-year-old Slovakian has a brilliant track record at Championship level, and could be an ambitious option for Derby County should they seal promotion from the third tier. With 34 clean sheets in 111 second tier appearances, he could certainly strengthen the Rams’ side next season.

Christian Walton

Now for a Championship option, and also a player out of contract this summer. Ipswich Town’s Walton could be an excellent pick-up for any League One or second tier outfit.

The Tractor Boys do have the option to extend his deal by a further year, though an exit could be feasible given his lack of game time this season. With 23 clean sheets in 46 appearances during Ipswich’s promotion campaign last season, alongside a further 122 League One and 83 Championship appearances to his name, the 28-year-old could be the perfect addition.

Luke Southwood

Cheltenham Town goalkeeper Southwood is yet another goalkeeper who is out of contract this summer and, should the Robins face relegation, he is likely to move on to continue playing at his current level.

The 26-year-old has made 39 appearances in all competitions this season and kept nine clean sheets in a struggling side at the bottom end of the League One table. The Northern Ireland international has frequently performed at a solid standard this campaign and could be a potential bargain this summer.
