Northampton Town vs Derby County: 5 players who could dictate the game today

Northampton Town host Derby County in League One action on Saturday afternoon with the Rams able to bolster their promotion push and extend their lead above 3rd place to seven points should they be victorious at Sixfields Stadium.

Northampton Town host Derby County in League One action on Saturday afternoon with the Rams looking to bolster their automatic promotion push.

Northampton Town head into this weekend’s clash with Derby County without a win in their last five, having lost their last outing 2-0 away from home against Wycombe Wanderers.

Matt Butcher scored a brace against the Cobblers to condemn them to defeat and leave Jon Brady’s men 14th in the table. They’re now 13 points off the play-offs and 15 points above the drop zone.

Derby County, on the other hand, secured a vital 1-0 victory over Bolton Wanderers last weekend to move four points ahead of their promotion rivals. Kane Wilson scored the only goal of the game as he glanced in a second-half header to strengthen the Rams’ grip on 2nd place in League One

Now, ahead of this afternoon’s clash, here are five players who could dictate Northampton Town vs Derby County

Corey Blackett-Taylor

Although the January signing is yet to register a goal or assists for the Rams, Blackett-Taylor could be in line to start against the Cobblers given that Tom Barkhuizen is unavailable.

Due to a combination of match fitness and injury, the former Charlton Athletic man has seen his game time limited, though he certainly has a point to prove at this new club and could replicate some of his form shown for the Addicks if he is in from the off this afternoon.

Sam Hoskins

Leading the way for goal contributions at Northampton Town, Hoskins has scored 14 times and registered four assists in all competitions this season.

The 31-year-old winger missed the last outing through illness, but should be in contention to feature against the Rams. He could be key to any success the Cobblers have in the final third.

Who is this?

Ebou Adams

Able to play anywhere in the middle of the park, Adams has been a revelation for Derby since signing on loan from Cardiff City in the winter window.

He has played a huge part in strengthening the Rams’ midfield and his impact cannot be underestimated. The tough-tackling Gambian has been nicknamed ‘the general’ for a reason, and he will likely have a big say on the result at Sixfields.

Jon Guthrie

Northampton’s standout defender this season has been captain Guthrie. He has been an ever-present member of the starting XI when fit and will have a huge part to play against Derby.

Warne’s side have had no trouble scoring away from home, although they were dealt a huge blow by the injury to Dwight Gayle, so the 31-year-old centre-back could have a big say in proceedings against a depleted Rams frontline.

Joe Wildsmith

Reinstated as the Derby County no.1 due to the absence of Josh Vickers, Wildsmith has more than staked his claim to retain his spot once Vickers is back in action.

The 28-year-old pulled off a remarkable save to prevent Bolton taking the lead last weekend, and a similar performance against Northampton would no doubt boost the chances of Warne’s men gaining a result.
