Sunderland keen on Sheffield Wednesday boss as two other candidates emerge

Sunderland have an interest in Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl while Will Still and an unnamed Belgian manager are also on the radar, as per i News.

Sunderland are on the hunt for a permanent manager ahead of the summer. Mike Dodds is in charge on an interim basis until the end of the season after Michael Beale’s exit, but a long-term role seems unlikely for the current stand-in.

After the failure of the Beale appointment and underwhelming 2023/24 campaign, the Black Cats will be determined to get this right. Dodds has said a number of names are on the shortlist as they weigh up their options.

Now, i News has shed some light on some of the candidates on the radar.

Stade Reims boss Will Still – who was targeted after Tony Mowbray’s exit – remains a figure of interest. An unnamed Belgian manager is also one under consideration, but the most eye-catching name in the new report is Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl.

The 34-year-old replaced Xisco Munoz at Hillsborough in October and has been a revelation since. He’s revived their hopes of staying in the Championship and has become a hugely popular figure among the Owls faithful.

Who is this?

Rohl has had a big impact at Sheffield Wednesday in just his first senior managerial role. He’s worked well in a tough environment, taking on an underperforming squad and turning their fortunes around all while working under the lead of volatile ownership.

Many are tipping the German to go on and find success at the very top of the game but as an upcoming, 34-year-old coach, it’s no surprise Rohl has appeared on Sunderland’s radar.

The affiliation between him and Wednesday is strong but if the right club comes calling, it could still be hard for the Owls to hold onto Rohl. That will especially be the case if they are relegated.

The earlier mentioned Still will remain a popular target too, while there will be intrigue over the unnamed Belgian candidate. Sunderland will be focusing on lining up the ideal appointment while Dodds looks to turn things around and end the season on a positive note on the pitch.
