Significant update emerges on Italian club’s interest in Birmingham City star

Birmingham City star Jordan James was wanted by Serie A side Atalanta in January but the club have now cooled their interest, as per Tutto Atalanta (via Sport Witness).

Birmingham City midfielder James has become a key player since making his way through the academy. Unsurprisingly, his displays have caught the eye, with Atalanta among those keen.

The Italian side were in for the Welshman in the January transfer window. However, the Blues stood firm and knocked back Atalanta’s advances, ultimately retaining the youth graduate’s services.

Alan Nixon reported on his Patreon that Championship rivals Leicester City had now joined Atalanta and Crystal Palace in eyeing the Birmingham City ace. However, new claims have now emerged from Italy.

Tutto Atalanta – a branch of reputable news outlet Tutto Mercato Web – states that the Bergamo outfit have cooled their interest in James.

It is said that the 19-year-old will ‘almost certainly’ not join the club. He’s admired club Atalanta’s scouting department but with his value rising and the desire to sign players ‘ready’ for Serie A football, he’s no longer on their radar as a potential addition.

Who is this?

Summer interest to remain?

While Atalanta have cooled their previously strong interest in James, Birmingham City will likely still face a fight to retain his services.

The midfielder has interest from the Premier League and as his stock continues to rise, that seems unlikely to wane. He has eight goals in 36 Championship games this season, nine Wales caps and nearly 100 Blues appearances to his name all before he’s turned 20.

Atalanta’s dropped interest won’t make it any easier to retain his services. The fact his deal is up in 2025 means a sale could be likely, and other admirers will be pleased that a potential competitor for his signature is out of the way.

Before Birmingham City have the James saga to deal with though, they have a fight to retain their second-tier status. They’re 21st in the Championship table and level on points with Huddersfield Town, who sit one spot below them and inside the relegation zone.
