‘Can’t see it happening’ – Sunderland star’s agent deals contract blow ahead of summer interest

Sunderland star Jack Clarke’s agent Ian Harte has said it’s unlikely the winger pens a new deal due to the club’s reluctance to break their wage structure.

Sunderland have seen Clarke emerge as their standout star since bringing him in from Tottenham Hotspur. He signed on a permanent basis following a six-month loan and he’s come on leaps and bounds in red and white.

The 23-year-old’s tally of 15 goals has him clear at the top of the Black Cats’ scoring charts. Overall, he’s managed 27 goals and 22 assists in 105 games for the club, becoming one of the Championship‘s best players in the process.

As a result, speculation over his future has been almost constant. There were top-flight links in January and amid the interest, Sunderland have tried to tie Clarke down to a new deal.

Their efforts have been to no avail, and that seems unlikely to change.

Speaking to i News courtesy of Freebets.com, Clarke’s agent Ian Harte has said that the Wearside outfit’s reluctance to break their wage structure means the winger is unlikely to pen a new contract ahead of the summer. He said:

“There’s not many people know this but in Jack’s contract he had to play a few games at the start of this season to then get offered a new deal. There was a deal that was offered but it wasn’t good enough.

“We were happy to sign a deal but that was earlier on in the summer time and it hasn’t been revisited.

“They have a [wage] structure. Lots of clubs have that. I don’t think [Sunderland] want to break any structure for any football player so I can’t see it happening, no.”

Who is this?

Sticking to the structure

Clarke seems bound to get interest this summer. After another strong season at Championship level, those who were keen on the winter will be likely to explore a deal ahead of the new campaign, and this latest development will offer hope.

Sunderland would have hoped to tie the winger down to a new deal to help protect their interests. However, they’ve got a structure and they look to be sticking to it.

There have been calls for more flexibility when it comes to adjusting the model at the Stadium of Light. The young group on Wearside have struggled at times and some more experienced heads and proven players wouldn’t go amiss.

When it comes to the wage structure though, it seems sensible to stick to their guns. The football business is a volatile one nowadays and if the structure is broken for one key player, there will be more stars who come and go, hoping that Sunderland will make an exception and pay more than their structure warrants.

Clarke is under contract until 2026, so they’re still in a strong negotiating position. Time will tell just how the situation pans out, but summer bids for the winger seem inevitable.
