3 Reading players capable of stepping up to the Championship in the future

Reading have managed to steer themselves away from the relegation zone since the turn of the year and now look set to retain their spot in League One for next season, barring any major drop-off in form, despite their points deduction and ongoing turmoil behind the scenes.

Reading have steered themselves away from the relegation zone since the turn of the year and are set to retain their spot in League One for next season.

Reading sit 18th in the table as things stand, seven points above the bottom four, having recorded an emphatic 4-0 victory over Cambridge United in their last outing.

Sam Smith, Femi Azeez, Lewis Wing and Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan were the goalscorers on the day for the Royals, with Northampton Town at home next up on their agenda after the international break.

There are a number of players within Ruben Selles’ squad that have already played at Championship level, but with a slight emphasis on the younger members of the side, here are three players who are capable of making the step-up to the second tier in the near future…

Sam Smith

Smith has been a standout player for Reading since rejoining his boyhood club from Cambridge in the summer. The 26-year-old striker has scored 12 goals in all competitions this season despite the Royals’ struggles.

He made eight Championship appearances for Reading during the 2017/18 season during his first spell with the club, scoring once, and could be a player in high demand at the end of the season. He has all the attributes required to settle into a second tier side.

Tyler Bindon

Having made the move from Los Angeles FC’s academy in the summer after impressing on a trial period, 19-year-old defender Bindon has been an impressive pick-up for the Royals.

The centre-back has featured 37 times in all competitions for Reading this season, starting the last 15 after cementing his spot in the starting XI. He is bound to progress with Selles’ side for a little while longer, though a Championship move in the future already seems plausible.

Who is this?

Charlie Savage

Yet another summer acquisition, Savage has a Champions League appearance to his name but is yet to feature above League One in his career so far.

The 20-year-old midfielder joined Reading from Manchester United at the start of the campaign, and has starred for the Royals over 41 appearances in which he has scored five times and assisted twice. He is another who may well be on the radars of a number of clubs this summer, though Selles will be eager to keep a hold of him if possible.
