Sheffield Wednesday keen to keep hold of 23-year-old, contract up this summer

Sheffield Wednesday are ‘keen’ to keep hold of Di’Shon Bernard this summer, as per The Star.

Sheffield Wednesday swooped to land the defender last summer and he has since become a key player for them in the Championship.

Bernard, 23, penned a one-year deal at Hillsborough which is due to expire at the end of this season.

The Star report that the Owls want to retain his services heading into the next campaign.

Sheffield Wednesday want to keep defender

Bernard has made 34 appearances in all competitions since his switch to South Yorkshire, 30 of which have come in the league.

Losing him for nothing in June would be a big blow for Sheffield Wednesday. However, the chances of him staying may well depend on what league they are playing in next term.

Danny Rohl’s side are currently in the bottom three and risk slipping back into League One.

The Owls signed Bernard in July last year to bolster their defensive department.

He was on the books at Chelsea as a youngster before linking up with Manchester United in 2017.

The Jamaica international, who has 10 caps under his belt so far in his career, went on to play once for the first-team at Old Trafford.

Bernard also had loan spells away from the Red Devils in the Football League at Salford City, Hull City and Portsmouth to get some experience under his belt.

He has turned out to be a useful signing for Sheffield Wednesday but his long-term future is up in the air right now.

The Owls lost 6-0 away at Ipswich Town last time out. They are back in action after the international break with a home clash against Swansea City on Good Friday before an away trip to Middlesbrough on Easter Monday.
