Opinion: Defender has earned Blackburn Rovers contract extension, deal expires this summer

Blackburn Rovers moved to add veteran centre-back Kyle McFadzean to their ranks in January, bringing him in from second-tier rivals Coventry City.

Blackburn Rovers were in dire need of defensive reinforcements in January and McFadzean arrived to bolster the ranks. He had dropped down the pecking order with Coventry City but as a Championship veteran and former defensive partner of Dom Hyam, the move was a smart one.

And, in the weeks following the move, McFadzean has proven himself to be a valuable asset. At the ripe age of 37, the Sheffield-born defender has played a key role in helping tighten up the backline with John Eustace at the helm.

He only signed a deal until the end of the season upon arrival, and there was no mention of an option to keep him on board beyond the summer.

However, after a solid first couple of months at Ewood Park, McFadzean has done enough to earn a contract extension with Blackburn Rovers.

Who is this?

A valuable part to play

Blackburn Rovers often given chances for young players to develop with chances in their first-team, be it loan talents, younger players they’ve signed from elsewhere or prospects who have come through their own academy ranks. Focusing on players with resale value is key as the ownership’s financial wrangles persist.

However, the signing of veteran McFadzean have shown how figures of such experience are of great value. He’s added some valuable steel to the backline to tighten things up. The extent of his pedigree and leadership abilities make him a great influence for those younger players in the group too, in turn aiding their development as they mature into talents capable of holding down starting spots in the Championship.

McFadzean was named as the club’s player of the month for February too, so he’s displayed the levels required to stand out at this level alongside the important intangible side of his character and game too.

Of course, it’s unlikely he’ll be tied down to a long-term deal. However, even if Eustace wants to bring other defenders in, McFadzean will be a valuable player to keep around the group. That aforementioned leadership is key to have in a dressing room and if called into action, he’s proven time and time again that he’s more than capable of doing so.

Time will tell how the season ends for Blackburn Rovers and what the future brings for McFadzean, but a contract extension would be deserved and it’s a move supporters would likely get behind too.
