‘Mixed bag’ – Predicting Gary Rowett’s first five results as interim manager of Birmingham City

Birmingham City confirmed earlier this week that former manager Gary Rowett had returned to the club on an interim basis until the end of the season in place of Tony Mowbray who is currently on a formal medical leave of absence.

Birmingham City confirmed earlier this week that Gary Rowett had returned as interim manager until the end of the season in place of Tony Mowbray, who is currently on a formal medical leave of absence.

Birmingham City were under the lead of Rowett 2014 and 2016. The 50-year-old has been out of work since October when he parted ways with fellow Championship outfit Millwall

The former Burton Albion, Derby County and Stoke City manager has just eight games to save the Blues’ season, with the West Midlands outfit currently sat 21st in the table and level on points with 22nd place Huddersfield Town in the relegation zone.

The first five of those fixtures come against QPR, Preston North End, Leicester City, Cardiff City and Coventry City after the international break. Here, we predict how Rowett will begin his second tenure with the Blues…

QPR (A)

Jacob Hackett: “Rowett is known for his defensively resolute style of play, and avoiding defeat against QPR would be an ideal way to kick things off with Marti Cifuentes’ men sat just one spot and one point above them in the table.

QPR have lost just two of their last 11 fixtures having climbed out of the bottom three themselves, and will feel confident of increasing their gap above Birmingham when they meet. However, I think the Blues are capable of grinding out a result.”

QPR vs Birmingham City prediction: 1-1

Preston North End (H)

Preston are a side with ambitions of a top six finish, and should they win their game in hand they will only be two points off the play-off spots. No doubt a tough test for Rowett’s side, although home advantage might play a part.

“I do think Birmingham will pose a threat to the Lilywhites, although this could be another draw with emphasis on Rowett prioritising the Blues’ defence.”

Birmingham City vs Preston North End prediction: 1-1

Leicester City (A)

“Certainly the toughest test between now and the end of the season for Birmingham. Not many teams have gone to the King Power Stadium and returned with a result this campaign.

“Despite a slight drop-off in recent weeks, the Foxes are still favourites for the title and it is difficult to see past a comfortable victory for the hosts on this occasion.”

Leicester City vs Birmingham City prediction: 2-0

Who is this?

Cardiff City (H)

“Depending on Cardiff’s results leading up to this fixture, the Bluebirds may have little to play for by this stage with another season in the second tier looking likely for the Welsh outfit.

“If the previous predictions are correct, or even close, Birmingham will still be desperate for a victory and I think this is the sort of clash in which they could achieve just that.”

Birmingham City vs Cardiff City prediction: 2-1

Coventry City (H)

“Coventry are another side who are in contention for the top six following their defeat in the play-off final last campaign. Currently four points off those allusive positions with a game in hand, and into the semi-final of the FA Cup, they are bound to be another tough opponent for Rowett’s side.

“I can see this being a close match, but with Mark Robins’ side ultimately coming out on top with the quality their squad possesses. A defeat here would round out a mixed bag of results over Rowett’s first five games back at Birmingham City.”

Birmingham City vs Coventry City prediction: 1-2
