Leeds United secure long-term future of 2023 signing

Leeds United youngster Josh McDonald has signed a professional deal with the Whites less than a year since joining the club, it has been confirmed.

Leeds United are renowned for bringing local talents into their youth ranks and giving them a pathway to the first-team. At the same time though, they often pick up youngsters from other academies to bring into their setup.

Young winger Josh McDonald falls into the latter category. Having made his way through the ranks at Hamilton Academical, the Whites added him to the U18 ranks last summer.

The 17-year-old’s time at Thorp Arch has started promisingly too. McDonald has five goals and four assists to his name in 21 games, the majority of which have been in the U18 Premier League. He’s also been around the U21s side.

Now, his development has been rewarded with a first professional contract.

Leeds United announced on Thursday afternoon that McDonald has penned a contract to keep him at Elland Road until the summer of 2026.

Who is this?

Another on the right path

The pathway from the Leeds United academy to the first-team is one that many have followed over the years. Archie Gray is the latest to do so, catching the headlines in a fantastic breakthrough campaign in the Championship.

It’s around this time of year where clubs up and down the EFL will be making decisions over the next steps for their academy players, Leeds included.

McDonald looks to be among those the Whites believe can go on to enjoy a bright future in the game. Since joining last year, he looks to have settled in well and promising displays for the U18s could have him lined up for more chances with the U21s over next season.

Securing his long-term future is a show of faith in the Scottish winger’s potential and in case any admiring sides emerge, it helps fend off potential interest.
