Juventus stance emerges on buy option for Southampton loanee

Southampton attacker Carlos Alcaraz is currently plying his trade on loan at Juventus, but Gazzetta dello Sport (via TuttoJuve) claim the Italian side aren’t prepared to trigger the buy option for such a high asking price.

Southampton started the season with Alcaraz playing in midfield, but he wasn’t able to nail down a starting spot on a consistent basis.

The 21-year-old was moved from central midfield, to striker, to the right wing and back again, and was shipped out on loan in January to get more minutes and regular playing time.

What Alcaraz likely wouldn’t have bargained for was a move from the Championship to Italian giants Juventus. His loan deal includes an option for The Old Lady to purchase him for a reported €49.5m if the move goes well.

However, a fresh report from Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport (via TuttoJuve) states that although his loan side do admire the Argentine, ‘he is liked but costs too much’, therefore believing the asking price to be too high.

Unsurprising given the Southampton valuation

Southampton signed Alcaraz for a reported £12m fee and so should he be moved on they are expectantly looking for a fee that exceeds what they paid to Racing Club just over a year ago.

However, he hasn’t shown that he is more than a £12m player from his performances in a Saints shirt or a Juve shirt just yet. So it is unsurprising that Juventus have baulked at the loan to buy option at that price.

He seems surplus to requirements at St. Mary’s given Russell Martin’s stance on loaning him out in the first place. Should they secure promotion he may stay, but if they remain in the second tier he could look for a way out. Southampton may have to lower their valuation slightly however.
