Detail of key Charlton Athletic man’s summer transfer emerges as Nathan Jones waxes lyrical

Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones says he would love to keep working with George Dobson but the South London Press states the terms of his Fehervar move are ‘binding’.

Charlton Athletic captain Dobson was subject of strong transfer speculation over the January window. His deal is up at the end of the season and amid his starring role at The Valley, there was interest in his services.

Ultimately, Dobson stayed put with the Addicks. However, a pre-contract agreement was signed with Hungarian side Fehervar, bringing an end to his stay in South London after three years.

The club captain has maintained a key role in Nathan Jones’ side since then though. Dobson has continued to play at a high level too, helping Charlton Athletic move up to 16th in the League One table and 10 points clear of the drop.

It’s clear that Jones is a big fan of the midfielder too. Speaking to the South London Press, he expressed a clear desire to keep working with Dobson, heaping praise on the player. He said:

“He’s been brilliant. I enjoy working with him, he’s been fantastic.

“There are a lot of things that people think he is good at that I want to actually take out of his game. And there is stuff I know he could get better at – he could’ve scored two or three goals. The energy he provides and the way he is around the place – I’m absolutely delighted with him.

“We don’t want any good players to walk out of this club and George Dobson is one of those.”

Jones was then quizzed about the deal between Dobson and Fehervar, to which he said that club secretary Ron Dangerfield or the Hungarian FA should be asked about that. However, the South London Press states that the terms of the 26-year-old’s deal with his prospective new club are ‘binding’.

As such, the only way Charlton Athletic can retain Dobson is by paying a transfer fee.

Who is this?

Looking to the future

Charlton Athletic would have loved to hold onto Dobson. He’s a key player for the club and his leadership makes him vital off the pitch too.

In truth though, he’s looked like a player ready for a step up from League One. Few might have expected that to come with a fairly left-field move to the top-flight of Hungarian football, but it marks a rise to a higher level and a new challenge for a player who has already spent time abroad in Holland with Sparta Rotterdam.

For Jones, Dobson’s exit will be one he has to address at the end of the summer. Time will tell if players currently on the books are entrusted with replacing him or if they dip into the transfer market for a new option.

It won’t just be his place in the starting XI that needs filling though. His off-pitch presence will need replacing and a new captain will have to be selected.

Time will tell just how the gap left by his exit is filled as pastures new await Dobson.
