‘The wake up call he’s needed’ – EFL pundit praises Leeds United star’s career turnaround

Leeds United winger Dan James’ impressive campaign has earned praise from Not The Top 20 Podcast host George Elek after notable improvements from the Welshman.

Leeds United signed James from Manchester United in the summer of 2021. His first season at Elland Road was a challenging one and ultimately, he left on loan to join Fulham the following year.

Relegation to the Championship saw the futures of many thrown into the air but James stayed put, and he’s become a vital player for Daniel Farke. Despite strong competition, the 26-year-old has held down a starting spot for much of the season and has managed a significant upturn in his production of goals and assists.

12 goals and seven assists across all competitions have helped James play his part in a potent Whites attack. He was amongst the goals again at the weekend as Leeds United moved top of the Championship table with a 2-0 win over Millwall.

Now, the progression of James has been highlighted by EFL pundit George Elek.

Speaking on the Not The Top 20 Podcast, Elek praised the improvements to the technical side of the winger’s game. He said:

“I’m amazed by Dan James this season. My perception of him, which I think was well-founded having watched a lot of him whether at Swansea or at Manchester United or Fulham, of just a pure speed merchant who had moments of quality in terms of his end product but it was always lacking.

“Whereas now, his delivery from wide, his shooting ability across the ‘keeper from that right channel has been so effective.

“And I think it’s more than just playing at a poorer level because I don’t think generally plays who looked to have a real technical deficiency in the Premier League drop down into the Championship and do what he’s doing this season.

“Maybe for his career, it’s been the wake up call that he’s needed, and he’s been thriving under Daniel Farke.”

Who is this?

An important season for James

The 2023/24 season has been valuable for James. After starring at Swansea City, he wasn’t able to kick on as hoped at Manchester United and his first season at Elland Road wasn’t the strongest.

In a drop to the Championship though, James has shown that he’s still a dangerous winger. And, as pointed out by Elek, the technical side of his game has come on leaps and bounds, helping him add end product to his list of threats for opponents to deal with.

While he’s started for much of this season, the form of Wilfried Gnonto has seen James drop to the bench for six of the last seven games. It’s been clear to see that his impact is still felt though and if Leeds United are to rise to the Premier League, the winger will be determined to prove he’s got what it takes to thrive in another attempt at the top of the English game.
