Opinion: Charlton Athletic should launch free transfer swoop for Championship man, was linked in January

Charlton Athletic boss Nathan Jones has the chance to add more players to his newly inherited squad this summer.

Charlton Athletic turned to the former Luton Town boss as their replacement for Michael Appleton and he has since done an impressive job with the League One side.

The Addicks have risen away from danger in the table and can start looking forward to the next transfer window now.

They were linked with Hull City midfielder Greg Docherty in January along with fellow third tier outfit Bristol Rovers, as per reporter Darren Witcoop on X, and they should rekindle their interest in him at the end of this season.

Charlton Athletic should target midfielder

Docherty’s contract at the MKM Stadium expires in late June and he is due to become a free agent as things stand.

The Scotsman is down the pecking order with the Tigers due to their other strong midfield options such as Jean Michael Seri, Tyler Morton and Regan Slater.

A move away would help him get more first-team football and Charlton would be an ideal next destination for him.

Docherty knows what it takes to get out of the third tier after helping Hull win the title in his first year back in 2021 under their former manager Grant McCann.

He made the switch to East Yorkshire in 2020 and has since made 141 appearances in all competitions, 16 of which have come in this campaign, and has fired seven goals.

The Glasgow-born man rose up through the ranks at Hamilton Academical and broke into their first-team before being snapped up by Rangers. He then played 19 matches for the Gers, as well as having loan spells away from Ibrox at Shrewsbury Town and Hibernian to get some experience.

Docherty would provide more competition and depth to Charlton’s options in the middle of the park and would also inject more quality into their ranks.

Luring him down a division would also be a statement of intent by the Addicks as they look to compete at the top end of the table next year under Jones.
