Norwich City’s January signing features for Under-21’s, needs to boost fitness levels

Norwich City striker Sydney van Hooijdonk got 90 minutes under his belt for the Under-21’s earlier this week against Reading, as detailed on their opponents’ website.

Norwich City swooped to land the attacker in the January transfer window on loan from Bologna to bolster their options at the top end of the pitch.

Van Hooijdonk, 24, has made seven appearances for the Championship promotion hopefuls but hasn’t scored yet.

He played the whole game for the Canaries as they lost 2-1 to Reading, with the Royals also confirming that George Long, Danny Batth, Liam Gibbs and Shane Duffy also featured.

Van Hooijdonk will be eager to build up his fitness levels ahead of the end of campaign run-in.

He could play a big part for Norwich as they look to cement their place in the play-offs above Hull City and Coventry City.

It always takes time for a player from abroad to settle into life in a new country.

David Wagner needs to be patient with him and allow him time to find his feet and adapt to a new physical league.

Prior to his move to Carrow Road, Van Hooijdonk had a stint at Heerenveen last term in the Eredivisie and was prolific for them, firing 25 goals in 52 outings.

He has been on the books of Bologna since 2021 and has played 16 times for their first-team, finding the net once.

The former Holland youth international is a product of the NAC Breda academy and broke into their starting XI as a youngster before moving to Italy.

Norwich are keen to use the international break to help the forward get up to full speed.

Van Hooijdonk wasn’t able to score against Reading but the main thing was that he got through the whole match.

The Canaries are back in league action on Good Friday against Plymouth Argyle at home as they look to keep their momentum going.
