Northampton Town man outlines stance on future, contract up this summer

Northampton Town midfielder Sean McWilliams has said he wants to stay at the club beyond this summer.

Northampton Town have a decision to make regarding the player’s long-term future.

McWilliams, 25, is out of contract at the end of this season and is due to become a free agent as things stand.

He has told the Northampton Chronicle & Echo: “There’s seven games to play this season and we’ll just see how things go but there always conversations going on in the background. I think myself and the club both know where we stand and I’m not in a place where I want to leave so we’ll see how it plays out.”

Losing McWilliams for nothing in late June would be a blow for Northampton.

He has made it clear that he doesn’t want to leave Sixfields anytime soon and the League One outfit need to sort an extension for him in the near future.

The Northampton-born man has been a great servant to his local team over recent years and has rose up through their academy ranks.

McWilliams broke into their first-team after a loan spell away in non-league at King’s Lynn Town back in 2017 and hasn’t looked back since.

He has made 218 appearances for the Cobblers in all competitions to date, 28 of which have come this term, and has chipped in with six goals.

The club have been promoted with him in their squad from League Two twice before in the past.

Jon Brady’s side went up from the fourth tier last year along with Leyton Orient, Stevenage and Carlisle United and have adapted well to life in the league above.

They find themselves in 14th position in the table with seven games left to play and are comfortably mid-table.

Northampton lost 2-0 away at Wycombe Wanderers last time out and are back in action this weekend with a home clash against promotion chasing Derby County.
