Barnsley pair take significant steps regarding injury recoveries, both edging closer to return

Barnsley pair Josh Benson and Robbie Cundy both got some minutes for the Under-21’s yesterday, as detailed on the official club website.

Barnsley’s development side faced Coventry City and won 3-1 after goals by Aiden Marsh (x2) and Aaron Atkinson at Oakwell.

Benson, who was an unused substitute in their last League One match against Cheltenham Town, played the whole game, whilst Cundy featured for 76 minutes.

The Tykes website has confirmed that Conor Grant and Barry Cotter were also in the starting XI.

Benson has struggled with injury this season and has been limited to just eight appearances in all competitions, six of which have come in the league.

Getting him back on the pitch will be a big boost for Neill Collins’ side as they eye promotion to the Championship.

He gives them more competition and depth in the middle of the park and something different to what they have at their disposal already.

The former Arsenal and Burnley man has been on the books of Barnsley since 2021 and is under contract with the South Yorkshire outfit until 2025.

As for Cundy, he joined the Tykes in 2022 from Bristol City and has since played 31 games. However, he is yet to feature this term due to a glute injury.

The centre-back will be like a new signing when he returns.

The Tykes drew 0-0 at home to Cheltenham last time out which was a frustrating result. They are currently sat in 5th place in the table and are seven points behind the top two and 10 inside the play-offs.

Collins’ side are well on course to finish in the top six, assuming they don’t collapse in the final eight matches, but their chances of sneaking into the automatic promotion slots are fading.

Next up is another home fixture against Cambridge United before an away trip to Burton Albion.
