Young’s switch to Darlington has worked out for all parties involved. His loan club have a reliable stopper between the sticks and he is getting plenty of game time under his belt to boost his development before heading back to Sunderland.

The Black Cats gave him the green light to head out the exit door on a temporary basis last month to get some experience.

He is highly-rated by the Championship side and will benefit more from playing senior football as opposed to with their development squad.

The fact Darlington have kept him for longer shows that he is doing a good job with them in the sixth tier. They are currently sat in 20th place in the table as they look to stay up.

Young has been on the books at Sunderland for his whole career to date and has risen up through their youth ranks.

He has been a regular for the North East outfit at various youth levels and is still waiting on his first-team debut. The prospect was handed his first professional deal in November running until June 2026.

The Black Cats drew 0-0 at home to QPR last time out and their season is starting to peter out. They are back in action after the international break with fixtures against Cardiff City and Blackburn Rovers.
